Fall 2011 Workshops

Reaching the Struggling Reader: A Neurodevelopmental Perspective/ BJENY-07

Page 27 of the Fall 2011 In-Service Course Catalog

When: November 29th  & December 6th, 9:30 am- 3:30 pm
Where: The Jewish Education Project (formerly the New York Board of Jewish Education)
520 8th Avenue, NYC

In the first half of this workshop, participants will learn about the process of learning to read as it relates to the pathways of learning, specifically: attention, memory, language, and organization. Through hands-on activities and role-play, participants will explore a variety of instructional accommodations and interventions for children who struggle with the basics of decoding: phonemic awareness, phonics, spelling, and sight words.

For the second part of the workshop, participants will use a neurodevelopmental lens to examine the primary demands of comprehension, and learn strategies for helping students who struggle to understand what they read. Participants will have the opportunity to apply the strategies for decoding and comprehension to a struggling student in their class and design an intervention plan for this child. Finally, they will look at an upcoming reading lesson, analyze the neurodevelopmental demands of the lesson, and prepare alternative strategies for students who are likely to struggle with that lesson.

This workshop includes 2 days of training and 2 half days of required, follow-up, school based mentoring. Participation of multiple teachers from a school, while not required, is encouraged, as this creates a community of learners and reinforces course content.
